Chess is a fun and free hobby you can start today. You only need to learn how the pieces move, a few basic rules and simple tactics. Then you play a lot, review your games and solve puzzles. With 20 to 30 minutes a day, you can become a solid club-level beginner in about 6 to 12 months.

You don't need any license to play chess. If you want to play in official tournaments, joining US Chess (the national federation) is recommended. It gives you an official rating. Under 18 you need a parent's consent to join and to create accounts on most sites.
Can I start right away? Go to lichess.org, click 'Learn' and finish the first lessons. Then play a game against the computer on level 1 or 2.
Pawns move forward 1 square (2 on their first move) and capture diagonally. Knights move in an L-shape and can jump. Bishops move diagonally, rooks in straight lines, and the queen both ways. The king moves 1 square in any direction. Learn also castling, en passant and pawn promotion.
Pawn = 1, knight = 3, bishop = 3, rook = 5, queen = 9. Use these points to decide if a trade is good. Don't give up a queen for a rook unless it wins the game.
Fight for the center with pawns on e4 and d4. Develop your knights and bishops early. Castle quickly to keep your king safe. Don't move the same piece twice in the opening and don't bring your queen out too early.
Learn forks, pins, skewers and discovered attacks. Do 10 to 15 puzzles every day. Before every move, ask: What does my opponent threaten? Is any of my pieces undefended?
Learn the back-rank mate, the two-rook mate and king and queen versus king. Then learn king and pawn endgames. They teach you how strong the king is as the game gets simpler.
Play longer games (10+0 or 15+10) instead of only 1-minute bullet. After each loss, look for your biggest mistake with the free computer analysis. Don't memorize long opening lines yet.
